Florida homestead question of the day

Can livestock drink floodwater after a hurricane?

Do not assume floodwater is safe; it may contain sewage, fuel, salt, chemicals, carcasses or harmful organisms.

Provide a known clean water source and keep animals away from standing floodwater whenever possible.

What to do

  1. Inspect wells and water systems after flooding.
  2. Use stored or verified clean water.
  3. Block access to contaminated areas.
  4. Ask local health, Extension or veterinary authorities about testing.
