Florida homestead question of the day

Should banana plants be fertilized during a Florida summer?

Actively growing bananas often need regular nutrition, but amount and timing depend on soil, irrigation, plant size and weather.

Heavy rain can leach nutrients while waterlogged roots cannot use them well. Follow UF/IFAS guidance and product labels rather than applying large corrective doses.

What to do

  1. Confirm drainage and active growth first.
  2. Apply measured amounts evenly away from the pseudostem.
  3. Water appropriately without keeping roots flooded.
  4. Maintain mulch without piling it against the plant.
