QuestionsKune Kune Pigs

Florida homestead question of the day

How do pigs stay cool during Florida heat?

Pigs need shade, abundant water, airflow and a safe cooling area because they do not cool themselves efficiently by sweating.

Mud or sprinklers can help when managed hygienically, but they cannot replace drinking water and permanent shade.

What to do

  1. Provide shade throughout the entire afternoon.
  2. Use more than one water source.
  3. Offer a clean wallow or misting area with drainage.
  4. Avoid transport and strenuous handling during peak heat.
