Florida homestead question of the day
Does FAMACHA detect every goat parasite?
No. FAMACHA estimates anemia associated mainly with barber-pole worm pressure; it does not diagnose every parasite or every illness.
A goat can have diarrhea, weight loss or poor condition with a normal eyelid score. FAMACHA works best within a broader monitoring program.
What to do
- Get hands-on training before relying on scores.
- Combine scoring with fecals, weight and body condition.
- Keep individual records instead of treating the whole herd automatically.
- Recheck animals according to veterinary guidance.
