Florida homestead question of the day

Is bottle jaw in a goat an emergency?

Bottle jaw is a serious warning sign that deserves prompt veterinary evaluation.

Soft swelling under the jaw can accompany severe protein loss, often associated with parasite burden, but other conditions are possible.

What to do

  1. Separate the affected goat for close observation without isolating it socially.
  2. Check eyelid color, temperature, appetite, stool and breathing.
  3. Collect a fresh fecal sample if your veterinarian requests it.
  4. Call before giving multiple medications that could complicate assessment.
