Plan Hurricane Evacuation for Homestead Animals

Make the animal list visible

Create a simple inventory with species, names or identifiers, current photographs, distinguishing marks, medications, behavior notes and emergency contacts. Keep a waterproof paper copy and a digital copy available away from the property.

Label carriers and equipment with contact information. For identification methods appropriate to a particular species, consult the relevant animal professional or agency.

• Photograph each animal from more than one angle.
• Record veterinarian and alternate caretaker contacts.
• Inspect carriers, gates, latches, leads and trailer access.
• Write feeding and medication routines in plain language.
• Keep proof of required vaccinations or ownership where applicable.

Confirm destinations instead of assuming

Most public shelters do not permit ordinary pets, although pet-friendly options may exist locally. Livestock, equines and poultry need different facilities and transportation. Call destinations and transport contacts before hurricane season and again when a storm becomes possible.

Keep at least one backup arrangement. A friend’s property may also be in an evacuation zone or unable to accept unfamiliar animals during an emergency.

Practice the calm parts

In safe weather, teach animals to approach carriers, walk through gates and load using appropriate low-stress methods. Do not wait for wind, rain and urgency to introduce unfamiliar equipment.

Plan help for any animal that cannot be handled safely by the available adults. Improvised loading can injure animals and people.
