Measurements
Mark before cutting
- Overflow: 1 inch below inner bucket floor
- Wicking cup: 3–4 inches wide
- Fill tube: 1-inch PVC or food-safe tube
- Air gap above maximum water line: about 1 inch
Build it in order
Step-by-step instructions

Confirm the nesting depth
Nest the buckets and mark where the inner bottom sits inside the outer reservoir.

Make the wicking opening
Cut a snug hole in the inner bottom for the perforated cup and small aeration holes nearby.

Install the fill tube
Cut an angled tube end and pass it through a snug opening to the reservoir bottom.

Drill the overflow
Drill through the outer bucket at the maximum water line below the inner floor.

Pack the wick
Fill the cup firmly with moist mix, cover large gaps with fabric and fill the planter loosely.

Fill, plant and test
Water from the top once, then fill the reservoir until overflow begins. Screen the tube opening.
Use and maintenance
Keep it useful
- Flush the reservoir occasionally.
- Let the reservoir drop between fills for crops that dislike constant moisture.
- Move or shade the reservoir if the bucket overheats.

Know when to stop
- Use only food-safe components for edible crops.
- Keep every water opening screened against mosquitoes.
- Do not connect this homemade planter to a pressurized line.
