QuestionsLivestock Guardian Dogs

Florida homestead question of the day

Can any farm dog become a livestock guardian dog?

No. Many dogs can alert or help around a farm, but purpose-bred LGDs have traits selected for living calmly with livestock and making independent protective decisions.

Breed label alone is not a guarantee, and non-LGD dogs may have strong chase, prey or herding behavior. Evaluate the individual and never assume affection for people predicts safety with stock.

What to do

  1. Define whether you need alerting, herding, property protection or livestock guardianship.
  2. Review the dog’s working background and behavior around the target species.
  3. Use secure, controlled introductions.
  4. Seek a trainer or mentor experienced with working LGDs.
