Florida homestead question of the day
Can any farm dog become a livestock guardian dog?
No. Many dogs can alert or help around a farm, but purpose-bred LGDs have traits selected for living calmly with livestock and making independent protective decisions.
Breed label alone is not a guarantee, and non-LGD dogs may have strong chase, prey or herding behavior. Evaluate the individual and never assume affection for people predicts safety with stock.
What to do
- Define whether you need alerting, herding, property protection or livestock guardianship.
- Review the dog’s working background and behavior around the target species.
- Use secure, controlled introductions.
- Seek a trainer or mentor experienced with working LGDs.
