Florida homestead question of the day
Do I need one or two livestock guardian dogs?
The number depends on predator pressure, terrain, acreage, livestock groups and each dog’s ability—not a universal rule.
One reliable adult may help on a small, well-fenced property. Larger or divided areas and serious predator pressure can require more coverage, while two immature dogs can also reinforce unwanted behavior.
What to do
- Identify the actual predators and times losses occur.
- Map pasture boundaries and blind spots.
- Evaluate one dog’s reliability before adding another puppy.
- Ask experienced local LGD owners about comparable conditions.
