Are livestock guardian dogs safe with chickens?
Some can become dependable poultry guardians, but no puppy or unfamiliar dog should be assumed safe with chickens.
Quick movement and fluttering can trigger chase or play. Success depends on the individual dog, working background, controlled introductions, maturity, supervision and the birds’ behavior.
What to do
- Begin with birds protected behind a secure barrier.
- Reward calm observation and interrupt fixation or stalking early.
- Use short supervised sessions before increasing access.
- Protect chicks, injured birds and new poultry separately.
