Florida homestead question of the day
Is panting normal for chickens in hot weather?
Panting can be a normal cooling response, but heavy or persistent panting can signal dangerous heat stress.
Chickens cannot sweat. They release heat through breathing, their combs and behavior such as holding wings away from the body.
What to do
- Move the flock into deep shade with strong airflow.
- Provide cool clean water immediately.
- Reduce crowding and avoid handling during peak afternoon heat.
- Observe whether breathing and posture improve.
