Florida homestead question of the day
Why do livestock guardian dogs bark at night?
Barking is one of an LGD’s main deterrents, especially when nocturnal predators and unfamiliar activity increase.
Not every bark means a predator is inside the pasture, but repeated nighttime barking should prompt a check for wildlife, loose dogs, people, damaged fencing or a dog that is bored, anxious or poorly placed.
What to do
- Inspect the area and fence line safely.
- Use cameras to identify recurring triggers.
- Remove attractants such as exposed feed or carcasses.
- Work on a neighbor and nuisance plan before problems escalate.
