Florida homestead question of the day
Should I shave a Great Pyrenees for a Florida summer?
Do not shave a double-coated dog by default; discuss coat, skin and medical needs with your veterinarian and groom out loose undercoat instead.
A double coat can help buffer sun and heat, but matting blocks airflow and traps moisture. Heat safety still depends on shade, water, airflow, body condition and close observation.
What to do
- Brush out loose undercoat and remove mats safely.
- Provide all-day shade and several water stations.
- Limit handling and exertion during peak heat.
- Ask a veterinarian before clipping for health or coat problems.
