Florida homestead question of the day
How long should new chickens be separated from the flock?
Use a meaningful quarantine period established with your poultry veterinarian or Extension professional, not a quick overnight separation.
New birds can look healthy while carrying parasites or infectious disease. Separation must prevent shared equipment, runoff and close contact.
What to do
- House newcomers apart from the resident flock.
- Use separate footwear, feeders and waterers.
- Care for established birds before quarantined birds.
- Watch appetite, droppings, breathing, skin and parasites.
