Calculate the load
Multiply planned gallons by 8.34 pounds and add barrel, platform and safety margin.

Choose a no-fall site
Keep the barrel away from play, animal, vehicle and foundation-damage zones with a safe overflow path.

Excavate and compact
Remove organic soil, add paver base in thin lifts and tamp each lift level.
- 04
Place a single block course
Set intact blocks with full bearing on the pad; do not stack loose towers.
- 05
Add a rated continuous top
Use a manufacturer-rated base or an exterior platform designed to distribute the barrel load across all blocks.
- 06
Anchor, fill slowly and recheck
Secure the barrel, connect screened overflow, add water in stages and check level after each stage.
Use and maintenance
Keep it useful
- Inspect level after the first heavy rain.
- Drain the barrel before moving or adjusting it.
- Keep the spigot low enough that the base does not need extra courses.
Safety boundaries
Know when to stop
- Loose dry-stacked towers are not an acceptable full-barrel stand.
- Get qualified help if the site slopes, the barrel is elevated, or people/animals pass nearby.
- Collected roof water is not automatically safe to drink.
