Mark before cutting
- Three matching pallets
- Rear corner stakes: at least 18 inches into firm soil
- Front opening: full pallet width
- Building/fence clearance: enough to turn and inspect material
Build it in order
Step-by-step instructions
Read the entire plan before making the first cut or hole. The check under each step tells you when it is ready to move forward.

Choose the compost site
Use a drained, partly shaded place reachable by hose and cart but away from feed storage and water bodies.

Verify and repair pallets
Use clean HT pallets; remove protruding nails and replace broken boards.

Mark a square U
Set one pallet at the back and one at each side, leaving the front open.

Drive structural stakes
Place stakes outside the rear and front corners, clear of utilities.
- 05
Fasten panels to stakes
Screw pallet stringers to stakes and connect the inside corners.

Start balanced layers
Alternate moist greens and dry browns, cover food scraps and keep the pile damp—not soggy.
Use and maintenance
Keep it useful
- Turn when the center cools or develops odor.
- Keep meat, dairy and diseased plants out of a basic backyard pile.
- Add a second bay later for finished compost.

- Check local rules for composting and setbacks.
- Do not use chemically exposed pallets.
- Wear gloves and avoid inhaling dusty moldy material.
