Safety boundary
What this guide cannot decide for you
Never let a property plan delay compliance with an evacuation order. Life safety comes before livestock, structures or equipment.
DiamondTrail Ranch
One plan for people, animals and property
A property-wide planning method for family safety, livestock, water, feed, power, evacuation, communication and recovery.
The direct answer
A Florida homestead hurricane plan should connect six decisions: when the family leaves or shelters, where every animal goes, how water and feed continue, which equipment and structures are secured, how official information is received, and how the property is inspected before normal chores resume.
Start with these checks
Safety boundary
Never let a property plan delay compliance with an evacuation order. Life safety comes before livestock, structures or equipment.
Draw the property simply: home, shelters, pastures, pens, wells, septic, electrical service, fuel, feed, water, trees, trailers and every gate. Then mark what fails if power, a road, a fence line or a normal chore path becomes unavailable.
For each critical system, name a primary method, one workable backup and the person responsible. A backup that has never been tested is still a question.
Large-animal transport, trailer loading, window protection and fuel planning take time. Set an early review point and a later go/no-go point tied to official watches, warnings and local orders—not a social-media forecast.
Write the conditions that make sheltering in place unsuitable for your household or property. Storm surge, flood zones, manufactured housing, medically dependent equipment, weak structures and transportation constraints deserve professional and local emergency-management input.
Do not start with cleanup. Account for people, listen for official instructions, avoid floodwater and downed lines, and inspect from a safe position. Only then move through structures, fences, water, feed and animals.
Photographs, notes and a written inspection order reduce missed damage and support insurance conversations. Keep repair work within the skill and equipment of the people present.
