Describe the pattern before changing the diet

Record which bird may have laid the egg, whether the problem repeated and whether production changed across the flock. Photograph the shell and note weather, molt, new birds, feed changes and stress.

Soft-shelled, shell-less, wrinkled, rough and misshapen eggs do not all prove the same cause. Avoid making the entire flock’s diet unstable after one egg.

Protect the complete ration

Layer feed is designed to supply a balanced nutrient profile. Too many treats or scratch grains can dilute that balance. Keep an appropriate separate calcium source available when recommended for the flock rather than mixing arbitrary amounts into feed.

Check whether timid birds can reach feeders and water. A correct product does not help a bird that is being blocked from it.

Connect shell changes with Florida heat

Heat can reduce feed intake and increase pressure on water systems. If hens eat less complete ration while panting and drinking more, production may change.

Improve shade, airflow and water access, then continue observing. A heat explanation should not be used to ignore a bird that is severely ill.

Recognize when shell quality is part of a larger illness picture

FDACS includes decreased production and soft-shelled or misshapen eggs among possible signs of avian influenza, along with serious signs such as sudden death, respiratory symptoms, swelling, discoloration and incoordination.

Those signs are not a home diagnosis. Sudden spreading illness, unusual deaths or multiple serious signs require current veterinary and FDACS guidance.
