Barber pole worm deserves special attention

Haemonchus contortus, commonly called barber pole worm, feeds on blood in the abomasum. Heavy burdens can produce anemia, weakness and bottle jaw without the diarrhea people sometimes expect from intestinal parasites. That mismatch is one reason a single symptom checklist is not enough.

UF/IFAS identifies gastrointestinal parasites as a major small-ruminant concern in Florida. The practical response is not panic or constant treatment. It is a repeatable observation and testing plan that catches meaningful change early and protects the effectiveness of the treatments a veterinarian recommends.

What FAMACHA can—and cannot—tell you

FAMACHA compares the color of the lower eyelid membrane with a standardized card to estimate anemia. It is valuable when barber pole worm is the main concern, but it does not identify every parasite, explain every cause of anemia or replace fecal testing and clinical judgment.

Technique matters. Lighting, how the eyelid is exposed and how quickly the color is compared can change the reading. Learn from a certified instructor and use a legitimate card. Do not rely on phone-screen color charts or a memory of what ‘pink enough’ looked like last week.

Fecal testing and dewormer resistance

A fecal egg count estimates parasite egg shedding; it does not count every adult worm or replace an exam. Repeated strategically, however, it helps a veterinarian interpret herd patterns and evaluate whether a dewormer appears to be working.

Resistance grows when parasites are repeatedly exposed to a drug and the susceptible ones are removed. Treating every goat on a rigid schedule can select for resistant survivors. Targeted selective treatment keeps some susceptible parasites in refugia and is a central part of modern small-ruminant parasite management.

Reduce exposure through pasture and quarantine decisions

Larvae concentrate close to the soil surface. Grazing very short forage can increase exposure, while rest, rotation, browse and avoiding chronically wet high-traffic areas can reduce—but not eliminate—risk. A tiny property may not have enough acreage for textbook rotation, which makes sacrifice areas, hay feeding, manure management and honest stocking limits even more important.

New arrivals can bring parasites that are poorly controlled by the products already used on your property. Quarantine, baseline observations, fecal testing and a veterinarian-guided arrival plan protect both the new goat and the resident herd.

Build a monitoring system you will actually use

A useful system is simple enough to survive a busy week: identify every goat, record weight or a consistent weight estimate when possible, track body condition, note FAMACHA only if trained, and keep fecal and treatment results together. The record should show patterns, not just emergencies.

The goal is earlier, better-informed action. It is not to become your own veterinarian. Florida parasite management works best as a partnership between daily owner observation, laboratory information, pasture decisions and qualified clinical guidance.
